研究発表および要旨:

Long tunnels, the home, and degenerate zones: some spaces of exception in the modern city
Geraldine Pratt (University of British Columbia)

Giorgio Agamben argues that the camp -- by which he means the concentration camp -- is now in some sense paradigmatic of the political space of modernity, and urges us to recognise it in all of its manifestations.  I draw upon my own empirical work with Filipina domestic workers, as well as that of other scholars, to map out such spaces in Vancouver Canada. These are spaces of exception, spaces where the law and liberal principles don't seem to work in ways that we expect. I will consider three spaces in particular: spaces at the border where refugees are detained without legal counsel; 'degenerate spaces' of the inner city; and domestic space - where domestic ideology makes it very difficult for domestic workers to enforce their legal rights.

講演は英語で行われますが、質疑には簡単な通訳が付きます。

巡検・懇親会:

講演後祇園花街をめぐるミニ巡検を行い、花見小路辺りでの懇親会を予定しています。
