Project: Research of the History of Urbanization / the State and Issues of City Economics, Society, and the Building Environment

Research Period: October 2002 to March 2006
Description: The China team analyzes architecture and ecology in Shanghai today with emphasis on new immigrantsf settlements, residentsf eviction from redeveloped areas, redevelopment states, and the renewal of new towns. The Japan team works on the analysis of slum areas, historical changes of condominiums, the social environment, and the association of transformation between behavioral spaces and the building environment.

Project: School Reform and Curriculum Development in Urban Areas

Description: The common characteristics of schools in Shanghai and in Osaka are modeled to develop an integrated study by observing schools in both cities. In this year, school reform and curriculum development will be focused on to examine actual conditions and issues.

Project: The Role of Intellectuals in Urban Area in China

Research Period: October 2002 to September 2006
Description: We examine the movement of modern society by perceiving the slight change in intellectualsf consciousness starting from the Qing era. Social awareness, concepts of values, and customs/systems in pre-modern Chinese society, which hampered the development of modern consciousness, will be revealed by analyzing intellectualsf thought since the Qingng era from a social historical view.

Project: Comparative Research of History in Japan and China in the Pre-modern Rra.

Research Period: Period: April 2005 to March 2006
Description: A comparative research of city cultures is conducted by faculty members in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and by COE members. UCRC members are making a bibliography of pre-modern Chinese cities and a database. Both the Chinese academy team and COE team cooperate on joint research by using a network. We aim to publish an academic report, inviting faculty members from the Chinese Academy.
