Southeast Asia Project

Outline

UCRC will focus on Sub-project 1-4, based on the academic achievement of monograph research about City Cultures up until the previous year.

Description
1) Soundscape, Street Culture (Yogyakarta, Chiang Mai, Bangkok)
2) Cultural Heritage and Tourism (Yogyakarta, Chiang Mai, Bangkok)
3) Creative Cities Based on Coexistence (Yogyakarta, Bangkok)
4) Holding the 4th Academic Forum and Publishing Academic Reports (Yogyakarta, Bangkok)
(1) is based on the research of street culture in cities. Street performance accounts for the soundscape. They are largely linked with each other. (2) suggests that we examine how cultural heritage contributes to tourism. In (3), we study the city layout for handicapped people with a view that modern creative cities need an idea of “coexistence" at the bottom level. In (4), discussion will take place in a forum, emphasizing the theoretical aspects of city cultures and the associations between the cities.

Procedure
(1): Soundscape is examined intensively in a few months both in Yogyakarta and in Chiang Mai, by collecting data. Street cultures are studied by collecting photographs of the street scene in Yogyakarta and in Bangkok. The data is also used for cultural heritage research.
(2): Shooting photographs of temples in Chiang Mai and in Bangkok will be done in four weeks. (two-week research twice) Tourism, politics and society are researched over 1-2 months in each place.
(3): Ideas for and practical approaches to coexistence will be examined in art centers for handicapped people, such as Arts for All in Bangkok and the YAKKUM Workshop in Yogyakarta.
(4) This will be done in November to December.
